Flags

Flags

Unit: Earth and Space

Big Idea: Weather, seasonal changes (math/science/language arts connection)

Focus Question: What is the weather like today? What is your favorite weather today?

Launch/Hypothesis/Prediction:
Total students in class

How many students like cold weather best?

How many students like hot weather best?

How many students like warm weather best?

If we use our sense of hearing we can tell if it is windy outside. If we use our sense of hearing, we can tell if it is raining outside. If it is cloudy, it might rain. There may be a storm if there is a lot of wind.

Materials
-       Cardstock
-       Felt

Planning:
First, make a wind flag with felt and allow children to decorate flag. Then, go outside with their flag. Next, observe what the flag does in the wind. Lastly, come inside and record what the flag did with the wind.

Data:
No wind
Some wind
Strong Wind

Claim/Evidence:
I claim that wind moves objects. Strong wind will always move light things but there has to be very strong wind to move heavy things. I know this because has to be very strong in order to move a building.

Conclusion:

We learned that the weather is different from day to day. We learned that the wind can be strong and soft. I wonder if the flag I made will move more (blow faster) if the wind is stronger.
