Launch/Hypothesis/Prediction:
When
walking to school today, what did you notice about where you were walking? What
did the ground look like? What do you think is under the sidewalk? What did your
feet feel? Did you smell anything? (using the 5 senses to help describe what
was seen, felt, touched, smelled)
The
ground we walk on is made up of dirt. I think that this is true because that is
what I see under my grass. Predictions of what the dirt will look like: wet,
clumpy, brown, grass in it, worms
Materials:
-
Paper Plates
-
Bag of Dirt
Planning:
- Every group will receive plate and bag of dirt
- The group will use their senses to make predictions about what the ground is made of.
- The group will make observations using a data chart about how it looks, feels, smells, and what they hear.
- The teacher will make a group chart on the smart board.
- The class will draw their conclusions about what they have learned.

Claims/Evidence:
We
saw different parts of the soil using our 4 senses. We discovered that our
ground isn’t just made up of dirt. When we compared what we thought to what we
found out, we noticed that dirt is made up of things like rocks, weeds, grass,
sticks etc.
Conclusion/Reflection:
What
did we discover that was in the bags of dirt that were alike or different from
our predictions? What does this teach us about what our earth is made of? Where
do we see dirt in our every day life? What things cover up the dirt? Why do we
do this? Refer back to the KWL chart for conclusions.
